Section D: Administrative Matters

1. What are HCI’s school fees?

For details, please refer to the information on our school website at https://www.hci.edu.sg/high-school/financial-info/

2. Will there be scholarships and subsidies offered to students?

No deserving Singaporean student will be denied entry to HCI because of financial reasons. There are a range of subsidies and scholarships available for those who are financially needy. Financial information is available here - https://www.hci.edu.sg/high-school/financial-info/

3. How big will the 2025 HCI Sec One cohort be?

The size of our Sec One cohort is dependent on MOE’s allocation. The number has been approximately 400 in recent years. This figure is likely to remain stable in the near future.

4. What is the PSLE Achievement Level Cut-Off Point (AL COP) to enter HCI (non-DSA)?

The score range for entry into HCI in 2024 was 4(D)-7(D)*. Schools’ score ranges may vary from year to year, depending on the cohort’s PSLE results and their school choices in the Posting Exercise.

*HCL Grade: (D) = Distinction, (M) = Merit

The HCL grades of the first and last student admitted into SAP schools are reflected in parenthesis.

5. Are the classrooms in Hwa Chong air-conditioned?

The Upper Secondary classrooms are air-conditioned.

6. How long does it take to walk from Tan Kah Kee MRT Station to the High School Section? Is it sheltered all the way?

The fully-sheltered walk from Tan Kah Kee MRT Station to the High School Section takes about 10 minutes. The alternative partly-sheltered walking route takes about 7 minutes.

7. What are typical school hours like?

Typical school hours for lower secondary students are from 7.30am to 1.30pm.

Upper Secondary students have afternoon lessons on certain days, and students’ timetable vary across programmes.

CCA sessions typically end around 5.30pm.

8. How long are recess and lunch breaks?

The duration of recess is 30 minutes. On days with afternoon lessons or other activities, there is also a lunch break that lasts 60 minutes.

9. Is a laptop/tablet compulsory for all students? If so, does the school arrange any laptop/tablet sales for students, or are they given the required specifications to buy one on their own?

At MOE’s Committee of Supply Debate in March 2020, MOE introduced the National Digital Literacy Programme (NDLP) for all schools and Institutes of Higher Learning to help students strengthen their digital literacy. Under NDLP, every secondary school student will own a school-prescribed Personal Learning Device (PLD). The PLD is essential for blended learning, whereby students will need the PLD for learning in class and during home-based learning. The PLD will also be used in tandem with the national e-learning platform – the Singapore Student Learning Space – as well as other educational technology to personalise and enhance students’ learning. This will also enable students to acquire digital skills and apply these skills as they navigate an increasingly digitalised world.

10. When will Secondary One students receive their PLDs?

The school will make arrangements for the purchase of PLD by the new Sec 1 cohort so all students will have a PLD to bring along to school for learning by Term 2 of each academic year. Parents have a choice to purchase a PLD through the school or purchase one that is compatible with the school-recommended PLD from other external vendors. Singaporeans can use Edusave to pay for the PLD that is purchased through the school. More details will be available once your son joins HCI.

11. Where are 3rd language lessons conducted?

Malay language lessons are conducted in HCI. For other 3rd language lessons, they will be held at the MOE Language Centres at either Newton or Bishan.
