Service-Learning

服务学习

Service-Learning is integral to Hwa Chong culture and our core value of 饮水思源 (remembering our roots and honouring our benefactors). Hwa Chongians serve and care for the community by initiating Service-Learning projects and collaborating with beneficiaries through sustainable partnerships.

Our annual Service-Learning Summit is also a key platform that gathers students, both from Hwa Chong and other schools, to learn the best practices from impactful Service-Learning projects, as well as to learn about community needs through invited community partners.

Here, we showcase 3 Service-Learning projects led by Hwa Chongians that have impacted the community.

Project Vitalize

“Being in Hwa Chong has opened up many gateways, one of which includes the opportunity to interact with the community at large through our Service-Learning projects. Our group in particular, Project Vitalize, decided to engage with the diabetic community, working together with our beneficiary Diabetes Singapore. While we managed to raise a commendable amount for our beneficiary, with over 200 volunteers from various schools islandwide, our main takeaway from the project was how beyond all the statistical data with regard to diabetes, there were, more importantly, people with stories to tell about their battle in combating diabetes. We are heartened to have learned from their journeys.”

Project Educar

“With Project Educar, we wanted to engage in meaningful activities with children from less privileged families, in order to enrich their educational journeys and empower them to be actively contributing members of society. In the process, we organised engagement sessions, day camps, and raised funds for Care Singapore, our beneficiary. At the end of the day, it was most hard-hitting to learn through my interaction with the children that many were facing difficulties in school, not because of choice but by circumstance. We hope to be able to contribute to sustainable solutions that can aid these children in the long term.”

Project Integrate 4.0

“Project Integrate allowed us to understand the hardships migrant workers face daily. Despite toiling under the hot sun, they are ever willing to contribute to Singapore’s development through menial labour. We are immensely grateful and truly appreciate their dedication to society.”
