Student Councils

High School Council (HSC)

The HSC oversees many of the key events occurring within the school. They range from intra-school events such as the Secondary One Orientation, to inter-school and even international events such as the annual Student Leaders’ Convention.

The HSC comprises 26 students selected from the Secondary 4 level and 8 students from the Secondary 3 consortium councils, inclusive of the chairmen and 1 other representative from their respective executive committees.

The council strives to act as a bridge between students and the faculty, aiming to enrich the students’ welfare as well as to be their voice, taking into account their needs and opinions.

Values In Action (VIA) Council

The VIA (Values-In-Action) Council is a student-led organization formed to encourage students of Hwa Chong to become active members of our community through the organising of various community outreach events. In addition we wish to help raise social awareness and inculcate a sense of responsibility and empathy for the community in among Hwa Chongians.

The VIA Council helps to organise school-wide service-learning events to allow students to gain a better understanding of our community. We also intend to serve as a bridge between the students and the community - by establishing contact with different organizations interested in providing CIP/CEP opportunities - and by creating a platform for students to easily contact these organizations.

The VIA Council continues to strive to make an impact within our school and create an environment where students are not afraid to reach out to those in need but instead are willing to step up and take initiative in contributing and giving back to the community.

Green Council

The Green Council was set up in 1999 as a student-led environmentalist council that advocates for action to be taken to combat climate change and environmental degradation and inculcate green habits amongst the student population.

The Green Council organises many school wide events such as Green Week and the Going Green the Fun Way sabbatical. It is also responsible for initiatives like the recycling league and thrift shop. Through these initiatives, the Green Council hopes to foster an environmentally conscious school community, contributing to the global movement of environmental conservation.

National Education Council

The National Education Council seeks to promote criticality and authenticity in discussing issues pertinent to Singapore. This includes issues of geopolitics, diversity and security against the backdrop of an increasingly globalised world. The Council does these through student-centricity and student-directedness. In promoting authentic and critical discussions, students are taught to helm activities for their peers, allowing for greater relatability. The Council also taps on the talents of the larger school community in developing materials and resources, allowing for the aforementioned goals of student-centricity and authenticity.

Since its inception in 2022, the Council has been involved in major Student Development Experiences such as Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day, NRIC Presentation Ceremony, and Racial Harmony Day. It has also liaised with a variety of internal and external parters to deliver memorable experiences. The list includes HCI’s EC3, 1 Singapore Infantry Regiment, Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), Migrant Workers Centre, Madrasah Aljunied, etc. The Council hopes to create new partnerships, while leveraging on existing partnerships to strengthen the quality of programmes offered to the larger school community.

Consortium Councils

Aphelion Council

The Aphelion Council was formally established in 1999, and since then, it has continued to nurture top student leaders. By organizing many events and initiatives such as the annual Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools, the Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools, and several exchange programmes, the Aphelion Council has served the interests of the students and the public.

The Aphelion Council strongly believes in the spirit of self-improvement, responsibility, determination, and unity as one. It strives to continue the legacy of our predecessors, and continue to foster capable and enthusiastic student leaders for many years to come.

iCouncil

iCouncil leaders represent the students of the iSpark consortium, which implements the School-based Gifted Education Programme.

At its core, iCouncil gives back to the school through Servant Leadership, planning and executing core events like the Annual Open House and a range of Founders' Day initiatives. This is complemented by activities that aim to nurture not only the well-being of iSparkians, but also to forge lasting bonds among members of the consortium. These activities are, furthermore, continuously relooked and reviewed, so as to better cater to the needs of the iSpark family.

Ortus Council

Ever since its incipience, the Ortus Council has proven to be an efficient and competent Council. Over the years, its mission has been consistent – to serve as a platform for councillors to develop leadership skills through hosting and organising various events - both school-based and external. Notable examples are the Singapore-Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools, and our school's annual National Day Concert.

Ortus councillors are also dedicated in bonding the Ortus community as well as improving Ortusians’ school experience through initiatives such as Ortus Peer Support Leaders, which helps freshmen integrate into the Ortus family. With these, the Ortus Council hopes to build a sense of belonging and pride among all Ortusians.

ProEd Council

The ProEd Council is committed to nurturing ProEdians into student leaders to serve, care and inspire fellow council members and the ProEd student body. Its mission is to nurture servant leaders who are people-oriented communicators, effective problem-solvers, and above all, people of good character.

The ProEd Council organises meaningful school-based events each year, namely the Secondary One Annual Camp (SOAC) and Hair for Hope, which benefits and reaches out to the entire school community. Through these, the ProEd Council strives to grow in resilience and wisdom and cultivate a proper work ethic, so as to wholeheartedly serve the student body with pride and tenacity.
