The Hwa Chong experience would not be complete without a bustling and vibrant calendar of events. Here, our students share their thoughts on a few of their most memorable encounters, especially when you join the school as a freshman.
Secondary One Orientation
“The Secondary One Orientation (SOO) is a student-organised event to welcome new Hwa Chongians at the start of the year. This allows all the freshmen to make new friends and integrate into the Hwa Chong family through fun and games. After an exciting experience as a Secondary One participant in 2019, I am glad I was able to see things differently as a facilitator. A facilitator’s duty is not just to help familiarise our juniors with the school campus - most importantly, I also found meaning in taking care of the Secondary Ones, sharing my experiences with them, and helping them have a good start to their journey ahead!”
- Ee Zhao Hui, SOO buddy
Secondary One Adventure Camp
“The Secondary One Annual Camp (SOAC) marks the end of a freshman's initiation into Hwa Chong Institution. It being the first camp I had ever participated in, I entered with nothing but nervousness, yet left after 3 days with fond memories, new experiences, and a well-bonded class. What truly stuck with me was how my seniors, some barely a year older, had helped in facilitating the camp so meaningfully. They were the ones who inspired me to return to SOAC as a facilitator myself. Despite the tiring training we had to undergo, witnessing my juniors grow in the face of adversities made everything worthwhile.”
- David Wang Jia Bao, SOAC camp facilitator
National Track & Field Finals
“The National Track & Field Finals is an annual event that the entire school looks forward to (pre-Covid), when we make our way to the National Stadium to support our competing athletes. While the last few years have definitely been memorable because of our being quadruple champions, I remember it more fondly as a lively affair, especially when we cheer our hearts out to spur on our Hwa Chong Team. As a student leader, I have personally led the school population in cheering too. Despite our hoarse throats at the end of the day, this experience has made my Hwa Chong life meaningful, as to me, it is a symbol of the Hwa Chong spirit: to inspire each other to achieve the best that we can.”
